RESUMEN
Las exacerbaciones infecciosas de la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) son la causa más frecuente de atención médica en este grupo de pacientes. Los agentes etiológicos aparecen en orden de frecuencia según la edad, la presencia de comorbilidades y sobre todo del grado de obstrucción al flujo aéreo subyacente. Las exacerbaciones de los pacientes con EPOC son causa de deterioro funcional respiratorio y sistémico que en ocasiones tarda semanas o meses en recuperarse. Hasta el día de hoy continuamos tomando los criterios del Dr. Anthonisen modificados por el Dr. Seemungal como definitorios de una exacerbación, sin embargo existen avances recientes en materia de biomarcadores que prometen objetivizar y coadyuvar en las decisiones diagnóstico-terapéuticas durante la atención de los pacientes.
