ABSTRACT
Pulmonary abscess is an infection of the lung parenchyma that produces necrosis and the formation of a cavity. Recent publications with respect to pulmonary abscess are scarce and to date the information on Mexican patients has not been published in the medical literature. Material and methods: Retrospective analysis of 34 cases of pulmonary abscess in adults treated in a teaching hospital. Results: The associated features were smoking in 55.8%, periodontal disease in 52.9% and diabetes in 44.4%. Sixty one percent of the lesions were found in the right lung and 38.8% in the left lung. The upper and lower lobes of the right lung presented with lesions 27.7% each one. The middle lobe with only 5.5%. Almost a third of the samples grew Klebsiella pneumoniae. No in-hospital mortality was not reported. Conclusion: In this series a high prevalence of patients with diabetes mellitus and aisles with Klebsiella pneumoniae were observed.
