The essential function of the respiratory system is to ensure that there is optimum levels of oxygen (O2) and proper disposal of carbon dioxide (CO2). For this exchange of gases is correct there is a need for the functions of the respiratory system to be successful. These functions are: ventilation (air inlet in the lungs), diffusion alveolocapilar (movement of O2 and CO2 between the pulmonary alveoli and blood) and blood perfusion (blood flow to the lungs). Any alteration in one or more of these features creates a fault in pulmonary gas exchange, causing respiratory failure.
