Myocardial performance index in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

ABSTRACT

Background: The myocardial performance index (MPI) is an echocardiographic measurement of the global myocardial function. The aim of this study was to measure the MPI of both the right (RV) and left ventricles (LV), and to explore the association between this index and the most important polysomnographic variables in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Methods: Patients over 18 years of age with OSAS were included. Patients with cardiac and pulmonary disease were excluded. Results: Ten patients were included (8 men and 2 women), median age was 50 years (minimum 34 - maximum 60), the median body mass index was 37 kg/m2 (30 - 39), and the apnea hypopnea index (AHI) was 77 events/hour (56 - 133). The median of the LV MPI was 0.64 (0.37 - 0.87), while that of the RV MPI was 0.57 (0.11 - 0.73). A significant association was found between the LV MPI and AHI (rs = 0.7, p = 0.01), and between the LV MPI and the respiratory arousal index (rs = 0.7, p = 0.02). Conclusions: Patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome have a biventricular myocardial dysfunction, this association depends on the severity of the OSAS and sleep fragmentation.
