ABSTRACT
In recent years, several descriptions of the importance of the HIF-1 alpha (HIF-1α) protein role in several biological and pathological events such as carcinogenesis and embryogenesis processes have emerged. Our group is interested in this protein and in its relationship with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) development, because. HIF-1α has been implicated in renal fibrosis genesis, where it has been reported that this protein regulates the epithelial-mesenchymal transition process, an event that is associated with IPF development. On the other hand, the IPF gene expression analysis, indicate that the genes regulated by hypoxia are altered, suggesting a primary role of HIF-1α in IPF onset, as well as the possibility of the induction of HIF-1α synthesis as an early event in its pathogenesis. The present review about HIF-1α and its relationship with IPF has been done because of its role and participation in renal fibrosis, as well as in different types of cancer.KEYWORDS
