The economic burden of COPD. Cost analysis at international level

ABSTRACT

Background and objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of chronic morbidity and mortality worldwide. Studies on the economic burden of COPD have been conducted mainly in Europe and North America. For Latin America there are few studies. The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review of the economic burden of COPD worldwide.
Material and methods: Studies were identified through systematic literature review using electronic databases in PubMed between 2000-2010. We included studies which carried out microeconomic analysis of COPD.
Results: We included 32 studies in the literature review. In twenty six were used the patient costs in order to estimate the economic burden of COPD. For patients the range of mean direct cost (USD) was (70.69-44,016.72), for exacerbation was (15.35-11,729). The ranges of mean indirect cost were (60.34-7,365.00) and (20.05-123.70) for patient and exacerbation, respectively. The proportion of direct costs was between 32.96 and 97.74%. The main items related to the direct costs were hospitalization and drugs.
Conclusion: There is a wide variety in direct and indirect cost of COPD among countries. It is necessary to develop studies about economic burden of COPD in Mexico in order to evaluate programs which prevent the disease and minimize the cost of Health care.
