Community-acquired pneumonia. Review and update with a perspective of health care quality

ABSTRACT

Community-acquired pneumonia is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Mexico and the world. The generation of new knowledge to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of Community-acquired pneumonia is originated from clinical research studies, however, generally there is usually a gap between the process of care of patients with community-acquired pneumonia, when compared with recommendations based on the best scientific evidence available. The process of improving the quality of medical care implies necessarily to incorporate the new scientific knowledge in the care process. It is striking that Community-acquired pneumonia is one of the diseases for which there are definite measurements of health care quality for the certification of health institutions. The purpose of this document is to provide the elements to systematize the care of patients with this disease, thereby facilitating decision making related to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention to ultimately improve the quality of care for these patients.
