ABSTRACT

The discovery of optic fiber revolutionized the diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy. Gustav Killian was the first one that could extract a strange body of the inferior airway with the help of an Mikulicz-Rosenheim esophagoscope, applying local anesthesia. This was worth him the title of “Father of the bronchoscopy.” In 1890 Chevalier Jackson developed an esophagoscope and designed many instruments. In 1904, Jackson developed the bronchoscopy with a small light in the tip and soon after designed a source of additional light and a drainage tube. Thanks to the advance of these techniques and with the development and improvement of other ones, the fiberoptic bronchoscopy has became very useful to diagnose and treat bronchopulmonar pathology. In this article we pretend to emphasize novel fiberoptic bronchoscopy techniques.
