ABSTRACT
Background: The extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is employed as a substitute of pulmonary function in patients with respiratory failure refractory to other therapeutic procedures. The flu has been described as a cause of severe respiratory failure with high mortality. Material and methods: We presents a 10 years old female with refractory respiratory failure secondary to type A influenza, treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The cannulation was made thru femoral vessels and we used a closed minimally extracorporeal system. Results: The extracorporeal oxygenation was used during five days and pH improved to a mean of 7.46, oxygenation to 95%, and chest X-ray film and hemodynamic parameters also improved during this period. However the support was suspended due to arterial severe insufficiency, and the patients died several hours after the weaning of the system. Conclusion: It was concluded that extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a useful option for support selected patients with severe respiratory failure secondary to viral pneumonitis.
