Bronchogenic carcinoma: Influence of diagnostic and therapeutical delays on survival. «Hermanos Ameijeiras» Hospital. 2003-2009

ABSTRACT

Background: Delays in diagnosis and treatment of patients with bronchogenic carcinoma are very common problems.
Material and methods: A descriptive, prospective and retrospective study was conducted. The medical records of patients with bronchogenic carcinoma whose were admitted in the «Hermanos Ameijeiras» Hospital from January 2003 to august 2009 were reviewed. Patients with histologically confirmed diagnosis, fully staged and treated in our institution were included. Those in whose was not possible to determine their present status were excluded.
Results: The diagnostic delay was lesser than 3 months in 59.5% of the patients and the median was 2.37 months. The therapeutical delay was lesser than 15 days in 74.8% of patients. In 46.7% of them it was lesser or equal to 7 days with a median of 9 days. The global median survival was 12.67 months.
Conclusions: The diagnostic delay didn´t influence on survival. The greatest therapeutical delays were associated to the longest survivals. This was related to the fact that patients with more therapeutical delays were those whose received radical curative treatments. The 5-years global survival was 9.0%.
