The development of photodynamic therapy (PDT) has provided a new method for local treatment in esophageal and lung cancer as well as in other malignancies in the skin, head and neck. The photodynamic therapy involves a photosensitizing agent (photofrin), which when exposed to light of the proper wavelength (laser), forms toxic oxygen radicals that result in cell death. This method is technically easy to perform, with local or general anesthesia and decreased risk of complications.
