HISTORY

In 1937, just one year after the founding of the Sanatorio de Huipulco, a group of phthisiology physicians gathered in Mexico City to discuss medical issues related to pulmonary tuberculosis. Among them were Drs. Donato G. Alarcón, Ismael Cosío Villegas, Alejandro Celis Salazar, Miguel Jiménez Sánchez, Aniceto del Río, and Fernando Rébora Gutiérrez. This select group called themselves “The Friends of the Koch Bacillus.” On March 15, 1939, during a meeting at the Sanatorio de Huipulco, the Mexican Society for the Study of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (Sociedad Mexicana de Estudios sobre la Tuberculosis y Enfermedades del Aparato Respiratorio) was officially founded with the following objectives: 1) To study tuberculosis and non-tuberculous pulmonary diseases; and 2) To cooperate with national and international organizations in the fight against tuberculosis. The founding act lists 27 members, led by Drs. Donato G. Alarcón and Ismael Cosío Villegas.

During the Society’s first formal session on May 4, 1939, Dr. Alarcón requested authorization for the board to take the necessary steps to publish the first issue of a journal as the Society’s official publication. The proposal was approved, along with an additional motion by Dr. Celis stipulating that all articles published in the journal must first be presented at regular Society sessions. On July 6 of that year, Dr. Alarcón presented a budget of $500.00 for printing 1,000 copies, which was approved to be covered by membership fees from Mexico City members. On August 10, 1939, Dr. Alarcón reported that Dr. Gustavo Baz, then Rector of the University, had authorized the use of the university press for printing the journal, provided the Society covered the cost of paper and printing plates.

At the October 5, 1939 session, Dr. Alarcón officially presented the first issue of the Revista Mexicana de Tuberculosis y Enfermedades del Aparato Respiratorio, today known as Neumología y Cirugía de Tórax (NCT). This inaugural issue covered the period from July to August 1939, with Dr. Alarcón serving as editor-in-chief. It listed 38 regular Society members—22 from Mexico City and 16 from other states—as well as 4 corresponding members residing in Havana, Cuba.

The journal changed its name to Neumología y Cirugía de Tórax beginning with its first issue in 1962. That same year, on August 16, during the presidency of Dr. José Ramírez Gama, the General Assembly unanimously approved the renaming of the organization to the Mexican Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (Sociedad Mexicana de Neumología y Cirugía de Tórax, SMNyCT).

In 2010, Dr. Andrés Palomar, then President of the SMNyCT, and Dr. Rogelio Pérez Padilla, Director of the INER, signed an agreement to merge the journals Neumología y Cirugía de Tórax and the Revista del INER. The merger was approved by that year’s General Assembly, giving birth to the current NCT.
