Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilatory support prior to eventual orotracheal intubation became crucial. They were the key to the likely success of initial treatment for patients with COVID-19 and acute respiratory failure, who might require admission to intensive care. This article reviews these treatment strategies in terms of their indications, technical aspects, and the accumulated evidence regarding their safety and efficacy.
